October 18, 2016 marked the return of theatre to the Vine Street School. Contractors worked over the summer to renovate the school’s gymnasium. The focal point of the project was the installation of a spectacular new wooden floor. However, when workmen hung the new stage curtains over the Columbus Day weekend, the overall reaction was one of–WOW! Students and staff were excited to put on a performance; they did not have to wait very long. During the Title I Literacy PEAK Night on October 18th, 5 second grade students from Mrs. Sherry’s and Mrs. Clark’s classrooms performed a Readers Theatre adaptation of Chris Van Dusen’s popular children’s book, The Circus Ship. The students practiced during Community School under the direction of Principal Silk. They gave an amazing performance and received rave reviews. This is just the beginning! There are already plans in place for students to present a play this coming Spring.
