Exciting news for the Vine Street School! First grade teacher, Mrs. Dionne, worked with dedicated volunteers, Ryan Weatherbee, MST, Jessica Muhlins, Ph.D., and Caroline Noblet Ph.D., to write a grant to Maine EPSCoR at the University of Maine to fund an aquaculture grant. This grant enabled our school to purchase a tank that creates an environment that sustains both aquatic creatures and plants. The name of the grant is Tank to Table: A hands-on introduction to Maine aquaponics and aquaculture. Through the project, students in grades PK-3 are learning about the growing field of aquaculture in Maine and the world. Volunteers installed the tank this past Spring. Students have been able to participate in a hands-on experience and to learn from several guest scientists and presenters who agreed to share their expertise with our students. The project is enriching the existing science curriculum and encouraging student aspirations to continue in STEM fields–particularly those pertaining to aquaculture in Maine.
